Stephen Colbert ‘apologizes’ to Trump, says ‘CNN lies’ after mistaking his show for ‘SNL’

With hopes of getting those Trump-supporting Roseanne numbers, Stephen Colbert let the people know Thursday he and the president agree about something: “CNN lies.”

“Hear me out,” the Late Show host said after pointing the finger at a network Trump has accused of being “Fake News.”  “Last night, we had my old friend Dana Carvey on the show, and he did a fantastic impression of the new national security adviser, John Bolton.” So what’s Colbert’s beef? Showing a screenshot, he said CNN wrote about the skit with the headline “Look who’s playing John Bolton on SNL.” (If the network did post such a story, it appears the article is no longer on the outlet’s website.)

“Fake news. I take everything back!” Colbert exclaimed in reaction to the incorrect headline. “I apologize! Donald Trump is a great president!”

“C’mon, CNN, this isn’t SNL,” he continued. “Unless you think S-N-L stands for Stephen’s Nightly Laughs.”

Colbert also provided some clues to the outlet to differentiate between the two programs.

“Here’s how you can tell that clip wasn’t on Saturday Night Live: It was a Wednesday, we tape during the daytime and we’re not live,” he said. “You got three things wrong in three letters. Still, it’s nice just to be recognized. So, thank you, MSNBC.”

Colbert and Trump still have plenty to disagree about. After showing a clip of the president speculating that he was even better at construction than being president, the comedian said, “Don’t sell yourself short, sir: You suck at both.”
