An old version deleted in 2022 is displayed
[edit]I don't know if this can be replicated by other users, but for me the File:Evelyn Salgado Pineda.jpg when it is displayed at 180px displays an old version that was deleted in 2022 [1] : [2]. Apparently it did not fix itself although a new version was uploaded in June 2024. -- Asclepias (talk) 16:00, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: I see the correct file. This almost has to be a caching issue on your machine. Do you have this if you look with a different browser? - Jmabel ! talk 19:43, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for looking. That is strange. There, it still displays to me the old deleted image of the woman in a black sweater, not the recent image of the woman in a green vest. I don't know how there can be a cache issue with an image deleted in 2022 that I had never looked at before recently. The browser should not have the ability to find a version deleted two years ago. But you're right, it must be a cache issue of some sort, given that you see the recent image. Maybe the image will fix itself now that someone else looked at it. I'll post an update if it happens. -- Asclepias (talk) 20:44, 27 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: I see that where you linked, too. Very weird. Looks like a bug if you are a non-admin and are able to see that. - Jmabel ! talk 19:08, 28 November 2024 (UTC)
- That raises an intriguing technicality. If you see the deleted ("black sweater") image at the specific url for the 180px .jpg image, but you see the current ("green vest") image in the 180px thumbnail displayed through wikicode in this section here, then what is the specific 180px .jpg url that you get when you ask the url of that "green vest" 180px thumbnail? I suppose that, for a user viewing Commons on the same machine and the same browser, the two different 180px .jpg images cannot occupy the exact same url at the same time, or can they? (That would be a Schrödinger's cat image, showing one state or the other depending on the observation.) -- Asclepias (talk) 15:36, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/8/85/Evelyn_Salgado_Pineda.jpg/270px-Evelyn_Salgado_Pineda.jpg. So it's not using a 180px image. - Jmabel ! talk 18:49, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Oh, that's interesting. So, the wiki code set at 180px leads you to the url of a 270px image of the new photo. Me, I still get the old image in the thumbnail set at 180px and it leads to the url of the 180px image of the old photo. Thank you for having participated in this little experiment. -- Asclepias (talk) 19:25, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Update: The 180px image has updated today to the current photo. -- Asclepias (talk) 17:01, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

I want my personal photo uploaded, undeleted
[edit]I have tried to upload my portrait three times, but it has been deleted immediately after uploading it. If it is for copyright, it is okay with me because it is my personal picture and no one is uploading it against my will. Arammala (talk) 08:09, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Arammala: Wikimedia Commons is not a social media, and we do not accept personal pictures without educational use, unless people are already contributors. Please read COM:SCOPE before uploading anything. Yann (talk) 09:28, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks, I understand. The photo will be used in another Wikipedia project, it is needed. Arammala (talk) 13:40, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- Your account does not show up as having any contributions to any other WMF projects, not even creation of a user page. What do you feel qualifies you as a "contributor"? Or are you the subject of an existing article? (If so, what article?)
- Also, unless these are selfies: if the picture is in scope for some reason, permission (presumably via COM:VRT) has to come from the photographer, not the subject of the photo (unless copyright has been formally transferred to you, in which case use VRT to show the formal transfer). - Jmabel ! talk 18:55, 29 November 2024 (UTC)
- The article which I am the subject of it is not confirmed yet is entitled Aram Mala Nuri-is still receiving feedback. - @Zhewar H. Ali: you might want to look into how references are normally formatted. Normally, references should be mainly inline; also, following (for example) the "cite web" template with more or less the same content outside of the template is actively confusing. And when using non-English references, you certainly want to use the "language" parameter. - Jmabel ! talk 19:36, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Copyright on anime figurines
[edit]Hello. As a preface, I am writing this hastily at work, and likewise have not read pages beyond the FAQ and some of enwiki’s image policy pages. I read a line there (which I cannot find again for the life of me) that read something like “photos of three-dimensional objects almost always generate a new copyright.” Are there no exemptions to this rule? I note the established File:Akihabara August 2014 09.JPG image and far more recent File:Reimu Hakurei cosplayer and Reimu Fumo.jpg, but I wish to be absolutely sure about this policy before I go ahead and crosspost a public domain Flickr image for my userspace. (Image in question would be two Nendoroids—or another type of figurine, not sure which image I would want yet—so, naturally, the portrayed characters are under copyright. The crux of this question is: would a photo of these figurines not be under the same copyright?) Thanks in advance! Velvetune (talk) 02:45, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Velvetune: A photo of a three-dimensional, copyrighted object ends up involving two copyrights: the copyright of the underlying work, plus the copyright of the photo. Both must be licensed by their respective owners. - Jmabel ! talk 18:25, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel, this is what makes most sense to me, but I’m having trouble wrapping my head around why that then wouldn’t be cause to delete the latter image and resize the former one (fair use, it’s used in a few places) for non-free content, as neither underlying work is free. Velvetune (talk) 19:51, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- My prior comment was just a general statement. I hadn't looked at the files in question. The former looks to me like it should be deleted, unless it is somehow covered by Freedom of Panorama in the country in which it was taken (I didn't look to see what country; there are few places where this would be OK, though). The latter might be trickier, I don't know enough about the character(s) in question to say what is or isn't copyrightable there. - Jmabel ! talk 22:03, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- The latter involves a character from en:Touhou Project, the doll would pose an issue but not the cosplay, IMHO. Abzeronow (talk) 00:00, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- Took a look around. COM:TOYS puts it in 50/50 territory, from what I can understand—the former photo was assuredly taken in Japan, where they likewise don't fall under copyright (Indeed, some countries, such as Japan, generally consider toys to be utilitarian objects and therefore ineligible for copyright,) but Commons servers are in America, where that doesn't fly. The first linked image was kept under de minimis in the past, but in any case, it rules out any image I was considering. Thank you both for your help; I think I'll just pick a photo of, like, a library instead, haha! Velvetune (talk) 07:27, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

"Main subject visible in this work"
[edit]Hello all,
I was uploading a few pictures yesterday of libraries in my hometown and was able to successfully search in the "Main subject visible in this work" to select the library depicted for all except one - North Park Branch Library. The file is here. I went to add a Wikidata item for the library, but did not know if the wikidata item and the wikimedia commons dropdown box were related. Anyway, the question that I am asking is how to add the "main subject visible in this work" to a file post-upload
Thanks so much!

- Yes, that is populated from Wikidata. Probably there is no Wikidata item for that library branch. - Jmabel ! talk 18:30, 30 November 2024 (UTC)

- I went and created the item in Wikidata; is there a way to link the two post-upload? JuxtaposedJacob (talk) | :) | he/him | 06:20, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- @JuxtaposedJacob: absolutely! Go to File:North Park Branch Library.jpg, click the "Structured data" tab (next to "File information") and if you've already edited Wikidata, the interface should be reasonably familiar (though not identical). - Jmabel ! talk 06:28, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

Regarding title cards/links in PD videos
[edit]Hey all, I wanted to upload some videos of a tornado event caught on surveillance footage here under {{PD-automated}}. However, the videos contain title cards, and include a link to the website of the uploader at the end. I am wondering, does that make those videos exempt to that PD criteria, and do they need to be edited out, or are they fine to include in the upload? Some videos that I am talking about include:
St. John's Security Camera Footage
Joplin Tornado: East Middle School Surveillance Footage
Thanks in advance! ChrisWx ☁️ (talk - contribs) 20:40, 30 November 2024 (UTC)
- Link to website should not be a problem. I don't have time to watch them through right now, but offhand the titles look below the threshold of originality for the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 17:39, 1 December 2024 (UTC)

- Any time you see an image in your browser, your computer has downloaded it.
- Assuming you are on a PC, you normally save a file to your computer's hard drive by right-clicking on it and then selecting "Save image as..." from the right-click menu. This is note specific to Commons, this should work on any site on the web that has not actively prevented it.
- In addition, on Commons, if you want out highest-resolution version of an image so that you can download that, you can either click on the image or click on the last entry in the line immediately under the image (e.g. "Size of this preview: 800 × 533 pixels. Other resolutions: 320 × 213 pixels | 640 × 427 pixels | 1,024 × 683 pixels | 1,280 × 853 pixels | 2,560 × 1,707 pixels | 6,000 × 4,000 pixels."). Either will load the full-resolution version, which you can then right-click and selecting "Save image as..." from the right-click menu.
- Apologies that I cannot reply in Turkish, but I'd be relying on machine translation which I'm sure you can as easily do yourself. - Jmabel ! talk 01:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

The copyright dilemma in SVG military insignia
[edit]I'm interested in uploading self-made SVG versions of the Turkish military insignia to feature in Wikipedia (regiment-level bodies). The issue is that (on the contrary to most countries) the Turkish copyright law does not consider government emblems/works created by pubic servants in public domain. They also don't have licenses on government websites. Therefore, as a Commons newbie, I cannot find any way to legitimately upload such content. Some people I have seen just credited such works for themselves, and claimed they are the sole owners of the work, but I think such an action would not be allowed. Thanks! AscendencyXXIV (talk) 22:51, 1 December 2024 (UTC)
- @AscendencyXXIV: actually, the majority of countries in the worlld are more like Turkey on this. - Jmabel ! talk 01:54, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
- Term of protection for anonymous works in Turkey is 70 years, so presumably anything of this sort before 1954 is out of copyright there. However, I'm wondering if the URAA means that anything 1939-1954 is still copyrighted in the U.S. That's subtle, and might better be a question for Commons:Village pump/Copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 2 December 2024 (UTC)

YouTube CC licenses?
[edit]Hello. This might be a mobile-only issue, but for some reason, YouTube CC licenses appear to no longer be visible at the bottom of the description of YouTube videos. Any idea where to check the license now? I don't think it's a case of YouTube suddenly removing the feature because you can still search for 'Creative Commons' videos. - @Starklinson: The licence is still visible for me using Firefox on Linux. For example, on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYCjGfQJ4kw I can click "...more" at the end of the description below the video and "Licence Creative Commons Attribution Licence (reuse allowed)" appears at the bottom of the expanded description. Something is wrong with this image

- There are 380 problems of this kind: quarry:query/88395 --Wurgl (talk) 09:01, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Like your query says, they are "images on Commons with missing description page". It looks like a sort of occasional bug. Many images currently listed there are part of rapid mass uploads by bots. Maybe a page was occasionally skipped. Fortunately, 380 images seems a relatively small number compared with the number of images uploaded. I don't know if it is necessary to create the description pages manually or if there is some automated procedure that takes care of fixing that. If it needs to be done manually, it is probably possible to figure out what goes in the page by a combination of looking at the information in the upload log and the information in the pages of related images uploaded by the uploader near the same time. Or simply notify the uploader and ask that they create the page. You could ask also at Commons:Village pump/Technical. - In a query on the command line I added img_timestamp and it starts with 20200924161905 (and ends with 20241203101928) … so I doubt the existence of some automagic procedure. Feel free to move this section to some better page. --Wurgl (talk) 11:49, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've fixed the ones uploaded by GeographBot, since I know where to get good descriptions for them. --bjh21 (talk) 17:51, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks! I added the actor and the date in the query. So maybe some more data can be added. --Wurgl (talk) 10:21, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- See also the list Files without file pages by Achim55, who seems to have been tracking this since April 2023. That list is apparently updated a few times each month. The history of the page allows to see the evolution of the situation, with some files added and some files removed when users create the description pages. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:28, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
Cities in New York (state) by year
[edit]Some other user has created categories for the cities of Long Beach, New York, Utica, New York and Yonkers, New York by specific years. Unfortunately, there seems to be no way to move these categories into alphabetical order. In the Category:2021 in New York (state) by city, for example, every other city is in alphabetical order. How can we fix this issue? --DanTD (talk) 12:42, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @DanTD: I'd have expected https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Yonkers_NY_year&diff=prev&oldid=965335666 to fix it for Yonkers, but if it does there is a caching issue and it will take time to percolate. If it doesn't I'd also like to understand why. Anyway, that step was certainly necessary, even if not sufficient. - Jmabel ! talk 19:46, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: did similar for Long Beach. Abzeronow (talk) 19:49, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Abzeronow: And I just did something similar for Utica, and I got the same lack of results. I could've swore there was a fourth city category that needed this fix. --DanTD (talk) 00:03, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- @DanTD: It was a caching issue. I just did a null edit on the three that weren't correct, and it looks right now. -- Auntof6 (talk) 08:28, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: I did too, but it didn't work. And every other year is still the same. ----DanTD (talk) 12:07, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- @DanTD: Maybe we're looking at different things? I did the null edits on these:
- After that, they appeared in alphabetical order in Category:2021 in New York (state) by city. I spot-checked other "<year> in New York (state) by city" categories, and all the subcats were in alpha order. Is caching different or separate for each user? -- Auntof6 (talk) 12:46, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Auntof6: Actually, after I posted that reply, I realized what you did. You carried out those null edits on each individual category. I did it on the main category. So I did it on the individual categories and it did work that time. --DanTD (talk) 12:50, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

Is it possible to rename files?
[edit]Greetings, I was wondering if this could be done because it appears that an image of a submarine has been misidentified.
A couple months back, an IP user removed this file (File:HMS Resolution (S22) in 1977.jpg) from the respective sub's article and the article about her class stating that the sub in the photo is actually USS Lafayette (SSBN-616). After doing some investigating it appears this IP user is correct.
Has I'm not too familiar with Wikimedia commons, if it is possible to rename a file, what should I do next? Earle Bartibus Huxley (talk) 15:22, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Earle Bartibus Huxley Most of us can only request a file to be renamed, see Commons:File_renaming#How_to_rename_a_file. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 16:08, 3 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading pictures to wikimedia commons
[edit]Can I upload the images I took at the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo? Aweatherspoon (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Aweatherspoon: Quite likely, but where you took them is not very informative in deciding if they are OK. Have you looked at Commons' scope? Also, if they are pictures of other people's copyrighted material (e.g. any but the most trivial signs, or other people's artwork), that would be a problem. - Jmabel ! talk 20:08, 4 December 2024 (UTC)

What about my photo
[edit]I have already filled up a photo on 1st December. I want to use it in Wikipedia item Nechay Olivér but there was no any reflection about "Nechay- photo from a gallery.jpg" and I can not find to use it to improve that. May I expect a confirmation about its usable permission? With compliments Phomalike (talk) 10:20, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- Is it licensed under a license that lets anyone to use it? If not, you can't use it and if you do, you might get in big trouble. Gnu779 (talk) 13:40, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Phomalike: If you look at your filter log, you can see that you triggered a filter for small files by new users. It says that it issued a warning, but apparently it disallowed the upload. Maybe the people at Commons:Village pump/Technical could tell you more about this type of situation. -- Asclepias (talk) 14:09, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Phomalike: as you can imagine, there is a reason we prevent cross-wiki uploads of small files by relatively new users: most of them are copyright violations.
- Is this a photo you took yourself? If not where does it come from (URL of web page, if it was online)? - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- This Photo came out in a Hungarian Journal of "Növényvédelem" 2024, 85 [N. S. 60]: 11. 514-518 but it is available in printed form in Hungarian. Please find the attached copy of this containing this photo. Internet adaptation will be available later as an archive Journal item.
- Please confirm anyone that I can use this in a Wikipedia item or not de jure. As I am not familiar in Licence regules, please indicate what I could apply in such a situation? Phomalike (talk) 09:22, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- So I suppose that it is a recent picture. For such an image, we require a formal written permission for a free license from the copyright holder. Please see COM:VRT for the procedure. Yann (talk) 09:32, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- In short, if you are not the copyright-holder there is no legitimate way to upload this to Commons without a license from the copyright-holder. - Jmabel ! talk 20:36, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

Uploading better versions of an image
[edit]Is there an efficient way to upload an alternate version of an image (that is, one that isn't compliant with the overwriting guidelines) and integrate it with existing ones? The best I've found so far is copying the description of the original file into Special:Upload. JayCubby (talk) 17:05, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
JayCubby, I'm not sure what you're asking and I think these type of questions are best suited for COM:HD.Ratekreel (talk) 19:06, 4 December 2024 (UTC)- Disregard above reply, I thought we were on Commons:Overwriting existing files/Requests. Ratekreel (talk) 19:21, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
- @JayCubby: that is pretty much what I do. Express the connection by linking the two using {{Other version}} or a more specialized template pair ({{Extracted images}} / {{Extracted from}}; {{Derivative works}} / {{Derived from}}; etc.) - Jmabel ! talk 20:18, 4 December 2024 (UTC)
how to modify a map range for an animal ?
[edit]Good evening, So I'm in Québec 3 hours from Montréal (a bit more north) and for the last 10 years, we've been seeing turkey vultures. However, the map on the Turkey vulture wiki does not seem to indicate that our range has turkey vultures in the summer. I've never contributed to wikipédia, but I would love to help since this animal is one of animals showing signs of the climate changes. (mostly due to how, in my father's younger days, there was a LOT of snow and never seeing these birds. Nowadays we see them every summer when it's time to fill the freezer with the farm stuff) 70.81.176.44 00:25, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- By "the Turkey vulture wiki" I'm guessing you mean en:Turkey vulture, the "Turkey vulture" page on the English-language Wikipedia. (If you meant something else, please clarify!) And in that case, you must mean this map which, interestingly, was last modified less than 2 weeks ago by MPF.
- There are basically three possibilities here; for all of these, providing a citeable source for the expanded range rather than just anecdotal evidence would be good, but might not be necessary.
- contact MPF and see if they can/will help you.
- put in a request at Commons:Graphic Lab/Map workshop.
- create your own version of the map. This one may be a little tricky though. To upload content at all, you need to create an account, but because you are not an established user, you won't be able to overwrite someone else's file, so you'd have to upload your version with a different file name. You would link back to File:Turkeyvulturerange.jpg using {{derived from|Turkeyvulturerange.jpg}} and ideally add {{derivative works|YOUR FILE NAME HERE.EXT}} to File:Turkeyvulturerange.jpg. Then you could go back to the English-language Wikipedia and propose changing the article to use your map (or just make the edit in the article yourself).
I'd recommend going with one of the first two possibilities: replacing existing images with derivative works is relatively advanced stuff, not usually where anyone starts their involvement with Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia.
- In any case, I recommend creating an account (and providing your email address as part of setting up the account: it will not be shown publicly) if you are going to become at all involved here. It makes it much easier for other editors to communicate with you. - Jmabel ! talk 01:03, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- It's a bit of a difficult case, as we have to rely on published information for maps. Submit your sightings to your local bird club (remember to give them accurate location data!), and eventually (yes, it'll be slow!) the information about the expanded range will work into maps published in bird field guides, etc., and when they do, we can revise our map here. I'll check other recent maps though and see if there is anything that already gives more up-to-date information than our map has. Thanks for bringing this up! - MPF (talk) 10:12, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- I've updated it from iNaturalist observations; this can be risky for some species, but with a conspicuous easily-recognised species like this, it does give reasonably safe results by taking the denser observations while ignoring outliers (the mapped observations will also be weak in sparsely-populated areas with few observers like southern South America). - MPF (talk) 20:45, 5 December 2024 (UTC)

ABOUT IMAGE UPLOAD
[edit]Hello all, I want to upload image which is my profile pic image. even though I have clicked it by myself wikipedia says "We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera" help me to upload my image HardikKansara106 (talk) 02:41, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- @HardikKansara106: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg photo as a new user. The photo you tried to upload is smaller. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. You have also triggered that same filter by trying to cross-wiki upload a png image as a new user. Such uploads of png images are not allowed at all. You indicated each is your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png image, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of each per COM:HR, including any metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you (or the photographer or designer) may need to license them on your official website or social media or send permission via VRT. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down (due to design decisions discussed in phab:T192744) or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. Also, we do not have profiles here like en:User:HardikKansara106/sandbox. Social networks have profiles. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:06, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

- @Apostle John Enumah: assuming the non-logged-in remarks are also from you: if you want to argue the case, you'll have to do that on the relevant website, the English-language Wikipedia, not here on Commons. You initially were asked simply why you were being told this; I hoped to spare you referral to a different site than where you asked by answering that question where you asked this. But this is like if you went to the electric company to ask why your gas bill was high, and they told you what they figured was the answer, and you started trying to argue the gas bill with them. We can't help you change your gas bill. - Jmabel ! talk 23:37, 5 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Apostle John Enumah and/or Anon IP: You need to address the issues on your talk page on English Wikipedia. User pages are not for encyclopedia biographies, which have specific requirements nevertheless. They are for people who edit the projects and upload media and relate to how that is done. I'm a pastor myself, but my user page tells a little bit about me personally but is mainly to provide information about my work on these projects. Bastique ☎ let's talk! 16:06, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

Просто не дуже розумію, чи потрібно завантажувати під вільною ліцензією в Commons чи через добропорядне використання на Українську Вікіпедію. Nikita.opanasiuk (talk) 13:27, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Good afternoon. How can I upload a photo of a deceased soldier? I made an article for him - he is a teacher at my school, where I currently work (uk:Levkovsky_Maksim_Vasilyovych). The photo was provided by his mother and she gives permission to use it, the photo was taken by his military unit. I can get written permission from my mother. I just don't really understand whether I need to upload it under a free license to Commons or through fair use to the Ukrainian Wikipedia.
- Hi, and welcome. We need permission from the Ukrainian military (unless the photo was first published before January 1, 1951, and the creator (if known) died before that date) via VRT per COM:Ukraine. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English or Ukrainian Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F or uk:ВП:ДК because we don't allow Fair Use here. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:28, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
Use of image allowed but partially
[edit]Hello, I would like to use an image from a website to illustrate a Wikipedia article, but I'm not sure if I can. On the website it is written : "The reproduction of all or part of this website on an electronic medium is allowed, provided that the source [website url] and the mention 'All rights reserved' are clearly and visibly included. The information used must be for personal, associative, or professional purposes only; any use for commercial or advertising purposes is excluded" So I think usage in this context would be allowed, but I'm not sure. Is there a specific license category for Wikipedia that corresponds to this kind of authorization/restriction? PheonixU+221E (talk) 15:53, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
- @PheonixU+221E: Hi, and welcome. We don't allow such images because "any use for commercial or advertising purposes is excluded". See COM:LJ for the justification. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:47, 6 December 2024 (UTC)

What to do with thousands of bot copyvios ?
[edit]In short: What is the best method to request speedy deletion of thousands of copyvios uploaded by a bot?
Context: This deletion request requests deletion of all files in a category of 107 copyvios (107 non-free photos by professional photographer Daniel Cande) uploaded to Commons by a bot Gzen92Bot. The photos are obviously not free at the source. (And that was also already known from previous discussions). Looking at more uploads by that bot, it can be seen that it systematically inserts false claims of CC0 on almost everything it uploads. Sometimes, it falsely tags CC0 files that are public domain by expiration of copyright, which is already bad behaviour but at least it's not too damaging. Often, it falsely tags CC0 files that are not free, which is much worse and potentially much more damaging.
Size of the problem: Searching only for photos by the same professional photographer Daniel Cande, it can be found that the bot created hundreds of categories and uploaded probably tens of thousands of non-free photos by that photographer. It can be expected that looking at more uploads of that bot thousands more copyvios of non-free works by other authors might be found.
Suggestions?: What could be the best practical method to speedy delete those thousands of bot copyvios? Placing copyvio tags on tens of thousands of files, flooding the speedy deletion maintenance category, may not be the most practical method. Another method could be starting a series of hundreds of mass deletion requests, for example each listing the files in one category. But considering the size of the problem, even formatting one or two such mass deletion requests every day, that could take practically a whole year to go through all of it. Also, deletion requests can sometimes wait several months before an administrator closes them, which is not practical for copyvios that should be speedy deleted. Another idea could be to simply notify the problem on the Administrators' noticeboard and let them deal with it as they want. Any other suggestions?

- @Asclepias: Given that they are in a category, it is easy for admins to do a mass delete with VFC, especially easy if there is nothing else in the category. Sounds, though, like the more immediate problem is to stop the bot in question from digging an even deeper hole. - Jmabel ! talk 06:20, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

- History of licensing should be checked. Gallica released some files in the public domain, and later changed the license. Once released in the public domain, they will stay this way. Yann (talk) 18:13, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- I checked "Le nouveau testament" these via archive.org, and they were under the same conditions in the earliest record (2022), so I deleted these. By the same photographer, and under the same conditions, there is Category:La Cenerentola, musique de Gioachino Rossini - photographies - Daniel Cande - btv1b9082182b. Yann (talk) 18:37, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- From discussions in 2012 and 2013, it seems likely that the photos by Daniel Cande were indeed noted "domaine public" on Gallica at that time. They were probably noted like that until circa the mid-2010s. However, it does not matter that Gallica had ever placed or not public domain notices on those photos on which it never had the right to do so. The matter was examined in this DR in 2017 (if one goes to the essential and skips the secondary discussions that take most of the page). So, it's not necessary to search the internet archives in cases like that. Searching Commons, there are hundreds of categories with photos by the same photographer uploaded by the same bot recently. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:57, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- When we have proof (license review or Internet Archive) that the files were released to the public domain, I don't see any reason to delete them. Yann (talk) 09:03, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

- Although that is not necessary for a large number of uploads by that bot. Through previous discussions, Commons has developed a reasonable knowledge and consensus about the actual copyright status of many Gallica fonds. It is established that Gallica or BNF cannot release in the public domain works on which it never had any rights (other than a limited permission to simply display those works on its website). That is the case, for example, for the photos by Daniel Cande, that the bot has uploaded to Commons by the thousands and grouped into some 350 categories. It's the same thing with photos by Joël Verhoustraeten, grouped into some 100 categories. It does not matter if Gallica had ever placed or not a public domain notice on works on which it never had the right to do so. Therefore, there is no reason to delay the speedy deletion of such known copyvios, which should be deleted ASAP. By contrast, works that Commons has established might have been validly released to the public domain by Gallica at some point in the past are, for example, photos by Roger Pic, because that photographer ceded his rights to BNF. The bot grouped them in some 350 categories. I would rather keep the photos by Roger Pic, but the difficulty for them might be to prove if they had public domain notices, now some ten years after the removal of those notices from Gallica. It can be noted that apparently the bot started to mass upload Gallica files to Commons after Gallica had already removed most such public domain notices from its pages. They were not CC0 anyway. The bot operator said that there are still inconsistencies between the present non-free notices and some technical parameter, but he should check the notices and should get familiar with past discussions on this subject and with the public domain tags of Commons and understand what CC0 is before launching the bot on mass uploads. -- Asclepias (talk) 21:05, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, the API https://api.bnf.fr/api-gallica-de-recherche used parameter "access", "fayes" = public domain. But yes, sometimes it's not the case. I have already modified the code to use the field "dc.rights" ("restricted use (convention BnF-ADM-xxxx-xxxxxx-xx)") in API returns. I will list all these cases quickly. Gzen92 (talk) 07:28, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: The BNF did acquire the copyright of several photographers, including Daniel Cande. That is specifically mentioned in the DR you linked above with a reference. Yann (talk) 09:06, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
- There is 1648 files and 2793 categories with "restricted use". Gzen92 (talk) 12:38, 9 December 2024 (UTC)

Hadley Airfield
[edit]Hadley Airfield was not in New Brunswick. I grew up on TEXAS AVE in South Plainfield. Hadley was my next door neighbor which put Hadley in South Plainfield, New Jersey, Hamilton Blvd. There was a big field between us, but nothing was on it but dead grass. My father was a pilot. He didn't fly Hadley's planes, but he did fly bi-planes. I have a picture somewhere of him stepping up onto the wing. His goggles and helmit, I think my brother has possession of them. I was soooooo sad to see a hotel there and Hadley gone, torn down. A lot of history was made in So. Plainfield by Hadley. That area sure has changed. My Grandparents live across the street on Texas Ave, originally UNION AVE. My Great-grandmother was the original owner of that property. She got it for $5.00 down and $1.00 a month, with only a daughter, who became my Grandma, when she married Frank DeFellipo. To fly commercial, Dad moved us to New Hampshire shortly after Grandpa died. I made trips to Grandma house When I grew up. We have to accept change and some times it is sad. Such is life. 24.91.21.65 07:22, 8 December 2024 (UTC)

How to upload modified version of Commons file by another user as a separate file?
[edit]I want to upload a modified version of File:Schaumankyltti.jpg as a separate file but am unsure how to go about it. I think the original version of the file has too much empty space around the plaque and the plaque itself is too dark in the image. I have made a modified version, but how do I upload it as a separate file as I don't want to replace the original file? I also don't want to choose "It's entirely my own work" on the Upload form as this is obviously not entirely my own work. I haven't even been inside the Government Palace myself.
- Hi, and welcome. What username cannot login? I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50,000 bytes or <2,000,000 pixels) jpg image as a new user. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it per COM:HR, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their official website or social media, or send the image and permission via VRT with a carbon copy to you. If you can't get a compliant license, the image may still be uploaded to English Wikipedia in compliance with en:WP:F because we don't allow Fair Use here. If you use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter. — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 03:30, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
